Tips on caring for and growing plants on your patio

Growing plants on your patio – Some people choose to live in apartments, condos, or town-homes, and because of this decision are unable to have a full blown garden in their backyard.

Just because you do not have a lot of room does not mean that you cannot take part in gardening. Many gardeners get started while planting flowers and plants out on their patios. Here are a few tips for growing plants on your patio.

Your first step is to decide which type of light your patio has. If you plan on having flowering plants on your back patio, you will certainly need quite a bit of light, as most flowers need heavy sun or direct sunlight for most of the day. There are some beautiful flowers that thrive in part sun and even more leafy plants, like ferns and ivy, which do great in more shade then sun. Deciding on how much sunlight you get on your patio or back porch can help you determine which plants and flowers you can include.

Direct wind can sometimes be very bad for your patio plants. Always take precautions to protect your flowers and plants from the wind. Too much wind can dry out your plants, make them look under watered, and can lead to extreme dehydration. Winds that come from the coast can also be dangerous to your plants, so be sure to take precautions.

When growing plants and flowers on your patio it is also important to pay close attention to how much or how little you have to water certain plants. Some plants will need daily watering and others can go several days to a week without being watered. Ideally, self watering planter pots are best as they release just enough water for the plant, as needed.
