Choosing between an electric oven or gas oven
If you are looking for a new oven for your home, then the first decision to make is whether to choose a gas oven or an electric oven. Each has its advantages and drawbacks and people have many different opinions as to which are best. Choosing an electric oven will give you constant, dry heat and they do not let out a lot of energy into the room.
The question is what is best for you? If you do a lot of cooking then making the right choice is very important and you will probably want to concentrate on the cooking properties of the different types. However if you want speed or economy the considerations will be different.
If you usually come home late and want to cook quickly, then speed could be your first concern. In this case an electric cooker is usually slower to heat up. You can choose a fan assisted model which helps speed things up by distributing the heat around the oven but gas is always quicker.
There are several things to think about when assessing cost; the initial price, the running costs and costs of repair. Electric ovens are usually cheaper to buy even when you choose a fan assisted model. It is generally thought that gas is cheaper to run but it is often hard to assess the costs of energy as they fluctuate a lot. However gas is used to make electricity and so is usually cheaper by the unit. Both types are fairly easy and cost effective to repair the usual problems such as burners and ignition systems can be replaced easily.
In terms of producing great food there are pros and cons with an electric oven. Firstly the heat is dry so that is great for crisping things up such as roast potatoes. However keen bakers seem to prefer gas cookers because the heat has moisture which stops the outer parts drying up before the inside is cooked. However there have been many advances in the design of electric ovens and you may find that a modern model can compensate for the drawbacks. Of course you will have to pay more for those sorts of features.
New technologies in electric ovens have made them much more appealing for many people. Some models have fans and forced air to help the oven heat up faster. They also may have heater in the top or bottom so that you can choose where the heat comes from for different types of food. For example for a pie you could have the heat coming from below to crisp up the pastry on the bottom. Some models include microwave features so that you can speed up the cooking and perhaps use a combination of microwave and normal oven heat to create a dish which is quick but well cooked. There are now electric ovens with steamers for healthy vegetables and even defrost settings.
Part of owning an oven that nearly everyone hates is cleaning it. One of the most popular features of electric ovens is self cleaning programs. The cleaning is achieved by the oven heating up to really high temperatures so that all the dirt is burned off. All you have to do is wipe up the ash which will have collected in the bottom of the oven.
Usually self cleaning ovens heat up to extremely high temperatures and so they have extra insulation. This means that they are more energy efficient but of course this is offset by heating it up to clean. If you are concerned about the environment and looking to reduce your carbon footprint, then you may be wondering whether gas or electric is more environmentally friendly. It is generally thought that gas is cleaner. It is more efficient as the heat is instant and electric usually comes from coal burning power stations. However it is estimated that cooking makes up less than five percent of the energy use in an average household so choosing gas or electric is not going to make a huge difference to your carbon footprint.
You will find that an electric gives off less heat. This is an important feature if you live in a hot place or somewhere that has hot summers. It can really spoil the joy of cooking if your kitchen feels like an oven. However if you live in a cold place the idea of heat coming from the oven on a cold night is probably quite appealing.
An electric double oven would allow avid home chefs the ability to cook many dishes at once, while an electric single oven would be ideal for almost any home cooker scenario. If you’re looking to save extra kitchen space, then consider adding an electric wall oven, which would fit into an open wall space. This would save the kitchen an abundance of space, by keeping a clunky floor model up and out of the way.
There are many aspects to think about when deciding between a gas or an electric oven. These days technology is constantly changing the possibilities of both. The ovens we’ve talked about are of the full-sized variety, unlike toaster ovens or a halogen oven.
