How To Grow Tomatoes On A Garden Trellis
Garden trellis netting – One of the most popular vegetables to grow in the home garden is the tomato. Tomatoes are loved the world around for both their taste and their ease of gardening. Despite their popularity, many people are surprisingly unfamiliar with the different tomato types and the varieties of ways in which you can grow them. One such method of growing tomatoes is with garden trellis netting.
Growing vegetables on a trellis is a fun way to both add beauty to your garden and save a little bit of space. Granted, the space difference growing tomatoes up a vine is going to be quite minimal compared to growing melons or squash vertically. But the benefits are still there nonetheless.
Before you try growing anything vertically, it is important to understand a simple distinction amongst plants. Most vegetables will be classified in either one of two different types of growth: determinate and indeterminate. For many plants this is simply the distinction between bush plants and vine plants, with the former being determinate and the latter being indeterminate.
What most people don’t realize is that many of your popular vegetables can be bought in either type. For trellis gardening, you will want the indeterminate or vine growing variety of tomato. This will have much better success on the netting, and will generally also spread your harvest out over a longer period of time.
As tomatoes don’t particular “grab” hold of the netting with their vines, you have to do a little coaching to get them to attach to the netting. As the tomato grows, simply weave the tomato plant in and out of the netting as it climbs. The larger the plants gets, the more it will weave itself into the trellis. Because the garden netting is flexible, you should have little trouble maneuvering the plant in and out of the netting grid.
You will find that the netting is sufficient to hold up the weight of the fruit the tomato plant produces, effectively eliminating the need for a cage to hold the plant up. Not only that, but growing the plant up a trellis is an attractive and exciting way to garden. Your friends will be quite impressed with your garden as you explore more and more ways to implement vertical gardening techniques.
