Having to deal with slugs, bugs and aphids is just a part of life and it is something that every vegetable gardener comes into contact with.

If you would like to do organic home vegetable gardening you will have to go the natural route and there are ways and means to go about this process. There are many home vegetable garden ideas when it comes getting rid of those nasty pests.

Here are just a few:

  1. Scatter crushed egg shells around your vegetables. Slugs and snails don’t like the rough texture of the shells and will soon leave.
  2. Collect empty yogurt containers  and cut rectangular-like holes at the top. Dig a hole in the ground and fill them up with beer, about three quarters of the way fill. Allow the slugs to wander towards the containers. You could collect a handful overnight
  3. If you are still having problems you could get some wire mesh and place it around your cabbages and lettuce plants which are the most vulnerable towards attack.
  4. A lot of people use a pepper and garlic spray. Mix a lot of chili pepper with chopped up garlic and some dish washing liquid. Worms don’t like this  mixture at all. Spray it over your cabbages.
  5. You can also plant garlic and marigolds. The bugs don’t like the smell of these too much either.
  6. Companion planting is also something to think about.

Home vegetable gardens do sound like like a lot of effort, but it will definitely be worth it when your first, chemical-free salad arrives !
