Issues With Your Low Voltage Transformer Lighting – And Various Solutions

Low voltage transformer lighting – It is pretty easy to install a low voltage lighting system yourself these days, but sometimes you do run into problems.

Especially, the use of a low voltage transformer can cause issues. Here are 3 common problems with lighting transformers, as well as some potential fixes:

My transformer hums or buzzes…

Low voltage transformer

In all fairness, this does not have to be a problem – meaning that it doesn’t necessarily indicate a malfunctioning unit. Linear transformers tend to hum at the frequency of the mains voltage it is fed with, which is either 50 or 60 hz in most parts of the world.

Therefore, it is not uncommon to hear a sound in that frequency range (or overtones thereof) emanating from something like a 12v transformer under load. If the transformer is mounted on a hard surface, such as drywall or plywood, then the sound will resonate louder.

A solution can be to decouple the unit from its mounting surface – perhaps using rubber grommets under it. Even better is to mount it directly on a stone or concrete wall – or perhaps a heavy wooden beam, or pillar if possible. That should absorb most of the hum.

Electronic transformers can have the same problem, but often at a much higher pitch. Here, you might try encasing it somehow – just make sure you can easily access it when you need to.

My transformer sometimes shuts off…

You might be overloading it – meaning that the light-bulbs it powers draw more current than the transformer is rated to deliver. This makes the internal overload protection of the transformer (if it has one) shut the power off, until the core has cooled down. If this has happened more than once after you installed it, then you may need to remove some of the light bulbs, or replace them with less powerful ones.

My lights start to blink when I turn the dimmer down…

Your transformer, or your bulbs for that matter, may not be suited to dimming. Always check that a transformer can be used with a dimmer, before installing one. This will ensure that you have the right setup to meet your needs.
