Somebody asked me the other day to recommend a good bar stool for them, as they were renovating their basement, and adding a bar for a place to gather together with family and friends in a social setting. I guess they grew tired of entertaining in their dreary, undersized living room, so he was looking to me for advice on the subject.

Now, I’m not what you would consider to be an expert on the subject of bar stools, but I had renovated my own basement a few years back, so I guess my friend was suffering from stool envy. Years had passed since my own purchase, and it was now time to help my friend research bar stools, so we started with solid oak bar stools. I prefer oak, though I’m sure there are easier stools to keep clean and otherwise maintain.

When it comes to bar stools, though, oak may very well be considered the most elegant material one can use. That’s not to say that cherry bar stools or mahogany bar stools, or… [well you get the picture] aren’t just as elegant or popular as oak, but they certainly do lack the reputation to go along with their style.

I distinctly remember the many queries I submitted to the major search engines, back when it was my turn to furnish my own rec-room bar, so that’s where I started with my friend. He was sitting right by my side, as I would be darned if I’d do all the work myself. We started with a simple search for “oak bar stools” and took it from there. Soon my friend was hooked on the entire process of typing in queries and then checking the results. It seems I also had to school him on the power of search engines, especially the ‘Big G.’

Next, we branched out into more specific areas; Swivel oak bar stools caught his eye, so we started pricing out some options. A swivel oak bar stool is a great option for somebody looking for a bar stool with a backing. Why go with a static stool, when a swivel seat gives you a little more mobility and ease of use? He liked many of the options we came across, but soon his curiosity got the best of him and we branched out even further from our starting point…

He began entertaining the thought of finishing the stools himself, so we explored the realm of unfinished oak bar stools. I’m not the DIY guy that my friend obviously is, so he was on his own in this department; I left him alone to his vices for a bit, while I tended to family matters and other areas of importance in my life. And when I returned…?

He was on a web page showcasing the advantages of mission oak bar stools. Once again, we had strayed into unfamiliar territory for me, so I asked my friend how he got where currently was. ‘Practice,’ he said, and chuckled a bit as he thought everybody shared his keen sense of humor. Wooden bar stools in this scheme often blend into any background, making them very versatile indeed. Mission bar stools feature straight angles, level seats, and back rests with numerous vertical groves, but they have no arms to speak of. Again, I was impressed with the minimalistic approach of the style, so we dug even deeper into this style.

My friend was hooked. Eventually he found some mission style oak bar stools that suited his bankroll, and he placed the order right there on my computer. I was happy to help, but he really did most of the work. I was proud of my neophyte friend, as he was now all growed up… The irony of the situation is that even though he accomplished most of the research while I was a away, I’m certain he’ll seek my guidance when it comes time for future projects involving home furnishings and search engine queries…
