The first thing to consider is the height of your new bar stools.  Bar stools come in standard heights.  The most common heights are a 30 inch bar stool and a shorter 24 inch bar stool.  Less common but still considered a standard height is the 34 inch bar stool.

Of course, you could order custom stools for any height desired. There are also some very inexpensive backless wood bar stools that have seats that can twist up and down to accommodate various different heights.

The next thing to consider is the material with which the bar stool is constructed.  The days of the old pub style bar stool  made from oak are long gone.  Of course, you can still find this type of stool but you know have numerous different options to choose from.  These days bar stools are made from cast iron, cast aluminum, wood, resin, plastic, wicker and wood among other materials.  In addition, bar stool seats can be found in any of the above mentioned materials or they can be made from leather or upholstered.

A big factor to consider is whether you want a swivel seat bar stool or a static seat bar stool.  Swivel seat bar stools can be slightly more expensive but they are much more convenient. Swivel seat stools allow you to get on and off the chairs without having to move the legs of the chair.  Not only is this convenient but it is also beneficial for your flooring.  Swivel seat stools will cause much less wear and tear on your floor.  They can also be good in smaller spaces.

A final consideration is whether you want a backless stool or a stool with a back.  Backless stools are good for small spaces but are generally less comfortable.

Think about the various different types of bar stool features before you start shopping.  A little planning will pay off in the long run. An oak swivel bar stool would make an elegant and functional home decor solution.
