The Dressing Table: A Girls Guide
A dressing table is the finishing touch every girl needs in her room; think about it, what better piece of furniture to store everything she needs for her beauty regime. The right dressing table will be sold, spacious and be large enough to accommodate all her cosmetic needs. Typically they come in 3 different varieties: Double Pedestal, Single Pedestal and the Console Table.
The Double pedestal dressing table is the largest of the 3 options and should be bought for the girl who has everything. The term double pedestal refers to the twin columns either side of the table which will include either a set of drawers or a small cupboard; the downside of this style however it that not all rooms have the space to take them since they can be quite large, heavy and consequently expensive.
The Single Pedestal Dressing Table is an ideal alternative and a great compromise between the double pedestal and the much smaller console table (see below). A single pedestal comes with only the one column, either on the left or the right hand side, but nevertheless it should contain more than enough storage space for a girls needs.
The Console Table is the smallest of the 3 options and is more like a desk than a dressing table. With no columns either side, drawer space is provided horizontally underneath the table top. Typically these are the cheapest and smallest option and should only be considered if space and cost are an issue.
After the 3 different styles there are the literally hundreds of materials and finishes to consider. The best dressing tables will be made of solid wood, such as Pine, Oak or Ash, and we recommend to try to avoid the cheap chipboard and plywood options if possible. Consider the solid dressing table to be and investment – if you look after it will reward you over time and will not depreciate in value. Adding a pine dressing table or an oak dressing table to your collection could actually be considered an investment, if properly maintained.
Finally, the finish of your dressing table. This will obviously be dictated by the overall decor of the room you are furnishing but there is a very broad selection of painted dressing tables available if you are after a modern finish, while for the traditionalist then unpainted, waxed finishes are ideal.
A pine dressing table would not be complete without the addition of a dressing table stool. Dressing table stools are designed specifically for the table they accompany, and can often be purchased as part of the complete dressing table set. Consider making this purchase with when adding the table to your collection, as it will help complete the ensemble.
