Simply put, a crock pot is an electrical slow-cooking device that contains heating elements around the internal edge of the pot itself. Simple in design, crock pots generally consist of only 3 main parts: The housing, the crock and the lid/cover. Actually, it’s quite often referred to as a slow cooker. The Housing is generally constructed of a plastic or alloy material, with an aluminum liner that contains the heating elements. Inside it sits the crock itself. This deep-dish pot is made of ‘crockery’ and it is designed to hold the food that will be slow cooked over extended periods of time
For ease of cleaning it’s recommended that you purchase a crock pot that is designed with a removable vessel. This will indeed make it much easier to clean after the cooking has finished, but if you find yourself with a design not having a removable liner, don’t fret… In that case, you’ll simply line the crock with a plastic cooking bag as part of the preparation. After the cooking is completed, simply remove and discard the bag, and voila! No clean-up!
The lid, of course, goes on top, and you’ll wanna make sure that the crock pot you choose has a see-thru lid, so that you can monitor the progress of your cooking without having to remove the lid, which would allow the heat to escape. And with slow-cooking, temperature control truly is the name of the game
Ideally, you’ll want the foods being cooked to reach a temperature of 140 degrees as soon as possible. At various points in the process you should check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer to see that 140 degrees is being maintained. If it isn’t then the crock pot itself may be flawed or defective
