Astrology and Synastry House Overlays: How You and Your Partner Affect Each other

Synastry house overlays – Many people find it hard to take astrological compatibility seriously. But despite the shallow and incompetent writings that abound on the subject, there are also many who have discovered its usefulness. One of the more practical aspects of compatibility by the stars is house overlays.

House overlays occurs in synastry, the astrological technique used for horoscope compatibility readings. It refers to the planets of an individual’s chart, and where those planets appear in another person’s chart (usually their spouse or partner). To identify areas in a birth chart, astrologers divide a chart into twelve “zones” and call them houses.

Where a planet in your astrological chart appears in one of those twelve zones in another person’s chart, it is said to overlay that zone or house.  As an example, you may have your Mercury in Scorpio in the fourth house in your own chart; but that same Mercury in Scorpio may appear in your spouse’s ninth house. All this depends on how the zodiac wheel is positioned on the natal chart.

Synastry house overlays are key to understanding how a two people affect each other and where. This is discovered through house overlays because each house or zone in an astrological chart is identified with specific dimensions of life.

To take the above example, let us say your Mercury is in your partner’s ninth house. The ninth house or “zone” in a natal chart signifies among other things: religious beliefs, college education, long distance travel, foreign cultures, adventure and publishing. Mercury is your ability to communicate ideas and to translate them into actions.

If your partner is a writer,  you may find yourself helping them prepare, edit and proofread their manuscripts.  If they like to travel, you help them make travel arrangements and may influence their decision on what places to visit. In turn, your partner makes you more curious about these and other ninth house matters.

Each planet represents a facet of your individuality. Each house governs a set of life experiences. Wherever a planet in your horoscope overlays a house in your partner’s horoscope, it points to a part of their life that you directly impact in a manner described by that planet’s nature.

To give another example, Venus is the planet of love and beauty. If your partner’s Venus falls in your fourth house, they will naturally want to beautify your home (e.g. redecorating) while you teach them to appreciate family life more.

Whenever you get an astrological compatibility reading, ask about house overlays. Make sure you have an accurate birth time (ideally for both partners, or at least the person whose houses will be used) and give feedback to the astrologer. You will probably discover a lot of interesting things about your relationship.
